No Dice Rolls Yet – But the UAE Is Building The Table For Regulated Gaming

Once upon a time within the world of the United Arab Emirates, gambling was a topic that lingered amongst only you and your close ones as a hushed whisper. It is an illegal hobby to partake in and deemed as inappropriate to speak on in the wrong company.

As we now enter 2026, we are not exactly throwing a casino-themed parade. There are some discussions regarding bringing the online gambling world to the UAE. Anything from sports bets, lotteries, or anything that involves money. Nothing gets a free pass. If it mentions game or money within the same sentence, they demand documentation.

This fully functional regulatory regime includes everything you could just imagine. We mean everything: licensing operators, certifying supplies, reviewing compliance measures, and overall just preventing this new gambling scene from looking as if it came straight from the Wild West.

The Soft Launch of the Year: Enter Play971

In December 2025, something very anti-climatic occurred. The UAE just softly launched its very first licensed online gambling and sports betting site.

No rolling out a red carpet, no confetti, and not even a birthday card sent its way. Just one morning, it was decided, “Today is the day.” In comes Play971. 

Play971 is operated independently by Abu Dhabi’s Coin Technology Projects LLC. Here, both hold licenses for both internet gaming and sports wagering from the GCGRA.

Now, how does it work if you are interested?

• Casino games and sports bets are available–and yes, this is real money (this is the UAE we are talking about)

• You must be physically inside the UAE to participate 

• You must be 21+

• Identity checks and geo-fencing are mandatory (say goodbye to your VPN backup plan).

• All unlicensed gambling remains illegal and is blocked. 

This is not wild gambling that you see in Las Vegas! This is all abiding by laws that are strictly monitored.

What Does “Regulated Gaming” Actually Mean?

We have to get one thing clear: regulated gaming is not the same as gambling legalization. There are no shiny casino floors with sparkling chandeliers while champagne is being offered your way. What does exist is a controlled pathway for licensed, transparent platforms to meet the UAE’s tight standards.

And to keep everything crystal clear, if you are looking forward to throwing your bets around like confetti–this is the market for you. Think of it as if you are RSVP’ing for a very exclusive dinner party.

So.. why does any of this matter?

This is all sounding like some good news! With these implemented into their overall structure, this means:

Both have notably received their respective vendor licenses in order to supply technology and services alike–all that fit within the UAE’s regulated image, of course.

Now, if you are unaware, these are in no way considered greenies. These companies are responsible for supplying data, improving online platforms, as well as gaming tech around the world. Licenses are not just given out – unless there is great potential for a business opportunity.

As you can see, this is far from a half-baked experiment. We have a serious, evolving ecosystem on our hands.

So No, This Isn’t New Vegas – And That’s The Point

The UAE has no interest in becoming the next Vegas. They are not looking to implement any casino resorts, or a multi-million jackpot advertised on any billboards. And most of all, absolutely no such chance as of any high-roller lounge with endless foundations of champagne.

Their newfound interest with online gaming is on their terms. It is regulated, predictable, and a highly controlled environment. To keep this very transparent, this sounds much more sustainable than the traditional online gaming world we are accustomed to.
